I looked at many ball retrievers (some much longer) but in the end I went with this one from Callaway. It's extremely lightweight, retracts to be small enough (18 1/2") to fit in a side pocket of my golf bag, and gives me a maximum of 10 ft. reach (94" length fully extended + 26" reach = 120" total maximum golf ball grabbing reach). When I first started looking at retrievers, I wouldn't have chosen such a relatively "short" retriever, but when I was out on the course, I noticed pretty much all the water hazards in my area have very dark water except right near the shore. So, realistically, if you can't see the ball in the dark water to begin with, it doesn't matter how long the retriever is if you can't see the ball anyway. Perhaps in certain circumstances if you aren't able to get near the water's edge, a longer retriever is desirable. Another factor is if you're a high handicapper, how much time do you want to be spending fishing for balls and holding up play. I figure if the ball can be quickly gotten and not hold up play, this retriever from Callaway will do the job in most instances. Otherwise, just move on and don't hold up the game.

The scooper part of the retriever works great. I've retrieved several balls now in the water and have had a 100% success rate. None have fallen out and it's easy to use - you just twist the whole retriever 180 degrees and the ball is captured. Easy peazy.

For those interested in construction, it's a series of plastic tubes. Just pull on the white ball scoop and the tubes pull out to form a pole the same way most other ball retrievers work. The plastic tubes seems like medium density polyethylene and have a nice brushed (not glass smooth) finish. It feels good in your hand. The tubes fit tightly together when extended, which is to say you can have confidence that the pole won't collapse on you while you're using it. A small white ball in the base snaps through the endcap to keep the whole unit in one piece when not in use.

If your length needs are in the 10 ft. range, this is a high quality, lightweight ball retriever that should last you a long time.
